Building Brighter Futures: Youth Training in Upolu and Savaii

From February to June 2025, the Oloamanu Centre for Professional Development and Continuing Education (OCPDCE) at the National University of Samoa, with support from the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and funded by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, delivered a series of short, targeted training programmes to empower youth in Upolu and Savaii.

This is part of COL’s ongoing commitment to enhance skills development and improve employability through flexible and inclusive learning opportunities. In total, 78 young learners completed training in:

· Microsoft Excel for Data Management

· Transactional Communication Skills

· Basic Business Management

· Basic Agriculture Skills

Participants were selected through a transparent application process following a national Training Needs Analysis. The courses were offered free of charge, and most participants were unemployed youth, women, or those from underserved areas.

Training was delivered in a culturally responsive and bilingual environment that emphasised experiential learning. Through workshops, group exercises, and interactive sessions, learners developed practical skills aligned with their career interests and local livelihood opportunities.

Graduates received certificates during official ceremonies held at NUS To’omatagi (Upolu) and Salelologa (Savaii), where they celebrated not only their new qualifications but also their personal growth.

This programme demonstrates COL’s belief that education is a pathway to sustainable livelihoods, and it reflects the Samoan spirit of tautua—service to one’s family, community and nation.

We commend all the young participants who committed to this opportunity and thank the trainers, partners, and communities who supported the programme’s success.
