Mentoring Industry Trainers in Fiji for Self-Paced, Self-Directed Professional Development

Mr Rupeni Lewetuitovo, in-country coordinator for the Commonwealth of Learning and a lecturer at Fiji National University (FNU), recently led a transformative onboarding workshop for workplace trainers at Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC).

Supported through funding from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), this initiative is part of the Pacific TVET Online Toolkit programme, developed by the Commonwealth of Learning to promote self-directed professional development across the region.

The two-day workshop enabled participants to assess their professional skill needs as industry trainers and develop plans to acquire the necessary skills and competencies through self-directed learning using micro-learning resources from the Toolkit. “As a TVET practitioner myself, I’ve seen the difference it makes when trainers are given the tools to assess where they are and where they want to go. The Toolkit helps them take ownership of that journey,” said Rupeni.

Mr Robert Okinda, COL’s Adviser: Skills, shared: “We are glad that the workplace-based trainers at Fiji Sugar have been empowered to tap into the Toolkit’s micro-learning resources—to learn what they want, when it suits them, as they work and earn.” Even those new to digital tools completed the programme successfully, thanks to peer support, IT assistance, and Mr Rupeni Lewetuitovo’s strong local facilitation.
