Skill development in Jimi District in Jiwaka Province marked a milestone with the graduation of learners from the Early Childhood Education and Basic Accounting training programme. This activity facilitated by COL and supported by a grant from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, reflects our shared commitment to strengthening local capacity and fostering sustainable community development.
Held on 20 December 2024, the ceremony celebrated the achievements of 100 graduates, with 27 attending in person. The remaining graduates were engaged in family and school preparation duties. Certificates were collected on behalf of those absent by Mr Jovi Gomay Goney, Principal of Tsingoropa Nazarene Primary School, ensuring no one was left behind.
A local bamboo band added a rich cultural touch to the event, underscoring the vibrant traditions of the highlands.
Among the graduates was Mr Wangi, a dedicated educator with 25 years of teaching experience, and Mr Philip None, a social worker who shared how the training has transformed his approach to early childhood education within his family. These stories highlight how education transforms not only learners but entire communities.
Professor Peter Scott, President of COL, sent a video message celebrating the graduates’ resilience in overcoming challenges such as the digital divide and geographic barriers. He also thanked MFAT New Zealand for their essential support, which made this success possible.
We are proud to partner with the Awest Pacific Community Leadership Training Institute in delivering quality training across 72 wards in rural Jimi District and Jiwaka Province.
This achievement is just the beginning. The certificates awarded symbolise a brighter future, equipping graduates to provide quality education and confidently manage finances, paving the way for greater prosperity in a relatively remote area of Papua New Guinea.
